Scientific experience of Johannes (Jos) Lelieveld
Jos Lelieveld graduated in the Netherlands at Leiden University from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (1984), and has a Ph.D. from the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy at Utrecht University (1990). His thesis subject was "The role of clouds in tropospheric chemistry"; thesis supervisor was Prof. Paul J. Crutzen. He was a research associate in the private sector from 1984-1987, for the Dutch company Geosens. He was a scientist at the Atmospheric Chemistry Division of the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Mainz, Germany, from 1987-1993. He has spent extended visits at the Meteorological Institute of Stockholm University (1991) and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego (1992).
He returned to the Netherlands to become Professor in Air Quality at Wageningen University in 1993. In the period 1996-2000 he was Professor in Atmospheric Physics and Chemistry at Utrecht University. During 1997-1999 he was founding director of the international research school COACh (Cooperation on Oceanic, Atmospheric and Climate Change studies). In 2000 he has become the director of the Atmospheric Chemistry Division at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry and in 2004 the managing director of the institute. Since 2003 he is spokesman of the International Research School (IMPRS) on Atmospheric Physics and Chemistry in Mainz. He is (co)author of more than 200 peer-reviewed publications, associated editor of several journals, a member of international committees, and has supervised 30 PhD dissertations. His research focuses on the processes that control photo-oxidants in the troposphere and interactions between atmospheric chemistry and climate.
